This month, Americans across the country will celebrate Independence Day while also recognizing a remarkable milestone: 250 years of American independence.
There will be celebrations from coast to coast, including major events in Washington, D.C., honoring the people, principles, and sacrifices that have shaped our nation over the last two and a half centuries. It is an opportunity to reflect on where we have been, what we have accomplished, and what responsibilities we have to future generations.
Over the 250 years, our country has faced challenges, wars, economic hardships, political disagreements, and periods of tremendous change. It’s not been a perfect run, but life itself is far from perfect. We’ve had our share of mistakes and mishaps, but in the end, we should still be proud of the generations of Americans who have worked hard to preserve the freedoms and opportunities that define our great nation.
As we reflect on those milestones and freedoms, we must remember, they were protected and strengthened by people who chose to participate, contribute, and invest in something larger than themselves.
I believe there is an important lesson in that for our industry. The shooting sports industry is built on many of the same principles that have allowed our country to thrive: responsibility, participation, stewardship, and a commitment to passing knowledge and traditions from one generation to the next. As leaders within this industry, whether we are manufacturers, wholesalers, sales representatives, retailers, or conservation advocates, we have an opportunity to help ensure those traditions endure. That means introducing new people to the shooting sports. It means mentoring young hunters and shooters. It means serving as a positive ambassador for our industry by helping others understand the values that exist behind the products we sell. And it means standing alongside and supporting the organizations and 2A advocates who are working every day to defend the constitutional rights that make these traditions possible.
It also means staying engaged. Strong organizations do not survive because they exist. They survive because people invest their time, energy, and ideas into making them better. The same is true for our industry. One of the things I have always appreciated about NASGW is that it is driven by the involvement of its members. The association grows stronger when members participate, share ideas, volunteer their expertise, and contribute to the conversations that help shape our future. The same principle applies across our businesses and throughout the shooting sports community.
As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, I think it is worth remembering that freedom and responsibility have always gone hand in hand. The opportunities we enjoy today exist because previous generations were willing to do their part. The opportunities available tomorrow will depend on what we do today. I encourage you to reflect on the people who introduced you to this industry, the traditions that have shaped your life, and the freedoms lived today because of the sacrifice and service of others.
The future of our industry, much like the future of our country, will be determined by those who choose to participate, lead, and invest in the next generation.
Until next time,

Bill Sumner
