Chairman's Message:

Engaging the Market

Bill-Sumner-Headshot - 400x400

As we get deeper into 2025 were are all grappling to understand the market and strategies to improve sales. FMG publications recently released a good article, A Repeat Performance  written by Hank Yacek. For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to dig in, it's worth a read. Hank does a great job of comparing 2024 vs. 2016 as well as discussing our post pandemic lull or "Market Hangover" as Hank calls it. One thing that I would add to his optimistic “Next 4 Years” outlook, would be the addition of 26.2 million new gun owners since 2020. Early on, I was privy to some stand-alone reengagement campaigns by manufacturers and a few savvy retailers, but most movements have fizzled or never gained enough support to justify the spend.

House Republicans Honor Second Amendment Promises, Advance Key Legislation

The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee held a committee bill markup hearing, a key initial hurdle before legislation can be considered for full House approval. The process gives legislators opportunity to amend the base bill before full consideration of the House. Several bills discussed during this particular markup covered pro-Second Amendment and pro-law enforcement priorities.

The approval of the bills passing out of committee is a great sign for Second Amendment supporters and the right of self-defense. It shows pro-firearm, pro-industry Members of Congress are making good on their promises to constituents as well as ensuring President Donald Trump makes good on his promises.

After all, the president declared, “I will sign concealed carry reciprocity. Your Second Amendment does not end at the state line.” President Trump made the promise in a video during the presidential campaign last year, according to Fox News.

    Changes to Expo Registration

As we prepare for the opening of the 2025 Expo registration, we want to inform everyone that we have a new registration system in place and there are some new procedures that will need to be followed to register.

Each individual from your company that plans to attend Expo must have an active profile linked to your company's membership account.  The Expo registration site is connected to these profiles, and only individuals with a profile under your company’s membership, with an email from your company domain, will be eligible to register.  You will not be able to add individuals directly through the Expo registration site, only via the membership site. Your company's designated key contact will need to log in and add all individuals that will need to register for the Expo. They should have received an email from NASGW with instructions on how to add individuals to the company account.

If you need assistance with this process, please contact us at staff@nasgw.org. Note that everyone must have a unique email address.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

    Gun Owners: Guilty By Association

New research shows declining support for hunting and target/sport shooting among the general population. A primary reason for this is concern over gun violence is high and folks are increasingly associating activities such as legal, regulated deer hunting and recreational trap shooting with illegal gun violence.

The findings confirm the need to present hunting and recreational shooting in a more value-positive context to a broad audience, say conservation leaders who commissioned the survey.

RIFLE Act is Reintroduced to Eliminate the Firearms Transfer Tax

On April 1, 2025, Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) reintroduced the Repealing Illegal Freedom and Liberty Excises Act, or the RIFLE Act. These bills (H.R. 2552 and S.1224 respectively) would remove a $200 excise tax that is imposed on law-abiding gun owners when they purchase certain firearms and accessories that are governed by the National Firearms Act.

Since 1934, gun owners wishing to purchase items such as suppressors and short-barreled rifles have been forced to pay a $200 “sin tax” to the federal government. This tax is, according to the ATF, intended to “curtail, if not prohibit, transactions” of these lawful items. But this legislation would remove that imposing financial barrier.
