Wrapping Up The Year

Well, the holidays are finally upon us and our fall season is coming to an end. I'm looking forward to spending time with my family and enjoying our own holiday traditions. The month of December is always a good time to reflect on the past year and start looking ahead to the new year.

With the election in the rearview, America’s voice has been heard; it’s time for change. I’ve had several conversations with many of you over the past couple of weeks and there’s much to be excited about, yet skepticism and uncertainty still loom. There’s no doubt that a Trump Administration should bring four years of stability to our industry, and a federal push for further regulation of firearms and ammunition is less likely than the constant barrage of state level legislation.

NICS Checks Top 613K for 'Black Friday' Week

The Firearm Industry Trade Association, revealed that the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) completed 613,380 background checks related to firearms for the week leading up to, and including, “Black Friday,” one of the busiest shopping days of the year. That figure is down from 2023’s total of 680,671 for the same time period. The 2024 total is a 9.8 percent decrease from the 2023 figure.

FBI NICS completed 169,906 background checks on “Black Friday” alone. The figure approximates firearm sales at retail on that day, although it also includes background checks for other purposes related to firearms such as approvals for concealed carry permits. NSSF will later this week release its Adjusted NICS figures for November reflecting only those background checks related to the sale of a firearm at retail.

NRA Files U.S. Supreme Court Amicus Brief Defending American Firearms Manufacturers in Lawsuit Brought by Mexico

The NRA filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

The Mexican government sued leading American firearms manufacturers in federal court alleging that American firearms manufacturers are responsible for violence committed by Mexican drug cartels in Mexico. The Mexican government seeks billions of dollars from these American manufacturers as well as the imposition of various gun control laws, including a ban on “assault rifles,” a ban on firearms capable of holding “large-capacity” magazines, limits on multiple-gun sales, and extensive background checks for firearm sales.

ASA Supports Introduction of the PARTS Act to Clarify Suppressor Definitions

On Friday, November 15, Representatives August Pfluger (R-TX) and Jared Golden (D-ME) introduced H.R. 10145, the “Protecting Americans’ Right to Silence Act of 2024” (PARTS Act) to amend the federal definition of “firearm silencer” under the Gun Control Act. This bipartisan effort, supported by Silencer Shop and the American Suppressor Association, aims to modernize the outdated definition, aligning it with current technologies and fostering future innovation.

The PARTS Act refines the definition of a silencer to focus on complete devices and a single principal component—similar to a firearm’s frame or receiver—rather than broad terms like “combination of parts” or “any part intended only for use” in a silencer. This change will provide much-needed clarity for manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.
